Ruffle cookies

Monday, September 10, 2012

As well as my Instagram fixation, I am now also obsessed with covering everything that stays still long enough in ruffles. I even managed to sneak them on to my kidlet's birthday cake (pics soon, I promise!).

So, when I was trying to think of a present for the goodies bags at a recent bloggers event I attended, ruffles were my go-to style.

But I think these cookies would make gorgeous wedding favours, don't you?

Unofficial book club cake of the month...August

Thursday, September 6, 2012

We decided not to have an official book club meeting in August as so many of us were away on holiday at various different times. But we agreed to meet at a local pub for a drink and a catch up during the summer. Anyone who wanted, could read the unofficial book and we spent a few minutes discussing it.
It was, as I'm sure you've guessed, Fifty Shades of Grey by E. L. James.
Do I really need to go into a description of the book? I'm sure you have either read it or heard of it.

Needless to say there were various opinions. The best being that it was an enjoyable, if badly written, pacey, holiday read  with 'it was terrible and I didn't finish it' at the other end of the scale! However we were all skipping the sex scenes by the end, as they became tedious. We didn't mark it, as we weren't the full group, but I would personally give it 6.5.
I didn't have chance to make the cookies for our meeting then but we did have an official meeting this week, so I brought some extra goodies along to represent fifty shades of icing! I did really mix up fifty different shades although the effect is quite subtle (unlike the book).

Have you read it? What did you think.

Something fishy

I made these monstrous fish cookies for an event next week at the Ministry of Stories, a charity dedicated to using story telling to inspire young people.

They are based on real fish!

Wedding favours

Tuesday, March 13, 2012
For the recent wedding fair I attended (More pictures to come, I promise!) I created some wedding favours.

This is based on a vintage tea set.

An old favourite, for the people who make the day magic.

Butterfly cookie

Gold cookies, for a special sparkle (these are my favourite, if I was getting married (again) I would have gold everywhere!)

Iced gems, which can be packaged, but how sweet to have vintage tea cups filled with these goodies on every table?

Named cookies for each guest.

I hope you enjoyed this quick trawl through some favours, I am still playing catch up, so lots of deliciousness to come!

Twisted-Fete cookies

Monday, August 1, 2011
Hello lovely people!
I'm afraid that once again I must apologize for neglecting you.  I have just come back from a lovely week away with Mr LD and the kidlets, and before that things were going a little crazy!
So it's time, now that things have calmed down, to catch up.

First is a batch of cookies I made for a 40th Birthday. The theme was a Twisted-Fete.  So I decided to paint some old fashioned fayre freak shows.  They still needed to be be beautiful and women.

I made entrance tickets for the tags.
I think the bearded lady was my favourite, although I do like the strong woman's frilly leotard!

When Good Cakes Go Bad!

Thursday, July 14, 2011
Warning!!!! Contains images that may shock!

If  you are a blogger I'm sure you can sympathise with my plight. I've had a crazy few weeks recently and when I look at the pictures on my camera I can see at least nine or ten blog posts that are stuck in there waiting to get out. There are many more in my head that haven't even reached the 'ready to be photographed' stage.  so while things are a little calm I will rectify the situation. Some of these may stretch back into the mists of time but I'm sure they are still relevant. (I refuse to give up on a good post!)

So first out of the camera, a horror story...cue scary music and upsetting images.

Sometimes when I'm making sweet treats they need to harden over night.  As you know fondant doesn't cope too well in an air tight box so my solution is to leave them in the oven...can you see where this is going?
I had a last minute order for fairy wand cookies that needed to be posted with next day delivery.  I only had time to make them the day before and leave them to harden over night ready for posting.
I got up early and put on the oven to cook small kidlet's pizza for her lunch box.  After half an hour of checking my e-mails I wondered what the smell of burning sugar was.  Honestly it took me some time to remember.
Do you ever do something so stupid that you want to hit yourself?  This is how I felt, I think I may actually have tried to hit myself over and over again.

I started panicking, I didn't think I would have time to make the cookies again, decorate them, let them harden and package them up in time for the 11.30am deadline for next day posting.
So, after dropping off the kidlets at school, I raced to the post office to find out about timings.  Fortunately my information was wrong and the deadline was 4.30pm, phew.
However next problem, I had used my last little bit of royal icing on the first batch and for some reason both the supermarkets in my town had sold out, (was everyone starting their Christmas cakes early?)
Time was pressing and I wasn't sure if I would be able to get to the next town's shops.
So I called in on a friend who is also a baker...sure that she would have some she could lend me.
Unfortunately she didn't...she had stopped using royal icing  and her new type of icing didn't harden...nice for cakes but very squishy for posted cookies.
As I was about to leave though she remembered a tub of merriwhite tucked away at the back of a shelf.  So I clutched the small bag of powdered egg white like it was gold dust and raced (within the speed limit ) home!

Three hours later, and with a wave of a magic fairy wand the cookies had dried sufficiently and were sent on their merry way.
The client was really pleased and I was very relieved.

I also went out and bought a pack of post-it notes to stick on the oven to prevent future cake trauma..

Will and Cake

Tuesday, April 26, 2011

How will you be celebrating on Friday?
I shall be consuming my own body weight in cake!

Photographs copyright Nathan Pask 2011

If however you don't have the time or inclination to bake for yourself Ms Cakehead has come up with the perfect answer.  She is opening a pop-up royal wedding cake shop for one day only at Maiden in Islington.

Here are some of the goodies I have sent for the day.

Hand painted portraits of the happy couple.

Red, white and blue iced gems
Wave it...eat it!  Hand painted shabby chic Union Jack cookies!

If you are around scoot over for a basket full of sweetness!

Mother's Day Cookies

Tuesday, March 29, 2011

I have quickly whipped up some cookies to sell at my kidlet's school pamper evening on Friday. I wanted a nice sketchy style and was quite pleased with the results.  Small kidlet was looking over my shoulder and said, "Mummy those are really, really.....normal!"

Everyone's a critic!

SOME COOKIE MAGIC!

Tuesday, June 8, 2010
I made a batch of fairy cookie wands last week for a friend's daughter who was having a fairy party.
My kidlets had an enchanting time.
Anyway I thought I would take the opportunity to create a little magic of my own on picnik.

Can you smell the fairy dust?

HAPPY EASTER

Saturday, April 3, 2010
I hope you all have a lovely Easter and don't get too sick from chocolate. (Don't do my trick of chocolate for breakfast, lunch and tea!)

Here are some delicious Easter goodies for your eyes to feast upon, sorry I can't invite you all round for afternoon tea,  you will have to settle for these visual treats instead.

And finally an Easter greeting specially for my Mum who would always say this to me on Easter morning.
"Christ is risen!"

THIS IS WHAT I'VE BEEN UP TO!

Sunday, February 28, 2010
Well it's been a very busy couple of weeks with lots of orders, so i thought you may like to see what I've been up to.
First there was a last minute order of cookies for a little girls party, so plenty of pretty colours and glitter.
They were the same as these cookies I'd done previously.

The first of four cakes was a lovely simple cake for a little boys first birthday, they asked for cars and hearts in reds and blues.  I really enjoyed doing this cake.

I had a barbie cake for a little girl. I have only done one of these before as they are not really my thing but I know it's what nearly every little girl loves.  My own kidlets nearly fainted when they saw it!

Remember this?

So my teasers were a Duplo cake for a little boy who actually really loves garbage trucks!

And some packaged cookies to go with them, I love the green and orange colour combo.

Well done deer baby, you were right it was Yojojo. I did a Waybuloo cake for a very dear friend whose third baby was one this weekend.

Finally a batch of butterscotch cupcakes, you can find the recipe here.

Hope you enjoyed my work I have a nice quiet week next week so I shall be doing some work on my website, blogging and tidying up!
